Abstract
Objectives: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted people's daily lives, including the elderly population. This study aims to investigate the association between changes in daily life due to COVID-19 and depression in the elderly.

Methods: Using data from the 2020 Korea Community Health Survey, a descriptive survey with secondary analysis was conducted with a sample of 71,342 elderly people aged 65 or older. The study assessed changes in physical activity, sleep, drinking, smoking, number of social encounters, and use of public transportation, measured according to the following responses: increased, no change, and decreased. Depression was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and the stress process model was used as the study framework.

Results: The study found a significant association between decreased physical activity (OR=1.27, 95% CI 1.07-1.50), increased sleep (OR=1.62, 95% CI 1.22-2.15), decreased sleep (OR=1.97, 95% CI 1.53-2.46), increased drinking (OR=2.90, 95% CI 1.37-6.10), decreased number of social encounters (OR=0.64, 95% CI 0.54-0.76), increased use of public transportation (OR=0.24, 95% CI 0.08-0.73), and depression in the elderly.

Conclusion: The findings suggest that to reduce depression in the elderly during pandemics like COVID-19, it is essential to consider physical activity, sleep quality, drinking, and social networks in their daily lives and implement both in-person and virtual programs. Policymakers and healthcare providers must prepare various policies and programs to promote mental health in the elderly during pandemics. It is important to note that this study only demonstrates an association between daily life changes and depression in the elderly and cannot establish causal inference.
